John Barry - The Collection - 40 Years of Film Music

John Barry - The Collection - 40 Years of Film Music
John Barry is one of the best represented film composers on CD, but this four-disc collection outdoes everything that’s come before with tracks from more than 50 film and TV projects. Of course there are the biggest names you’d expect. James Bond is acknowledged by 10 of the infamous themes and a couple of suites. There’s the Western romance of Dances with Wolves, the sultriness of Body Heat, the jazzy highs at The Cotton Club and the encapsulation of the 1960s by The Ipcress File. But this collection’s strength is in not just concentrating on well-known classics such as Born Free or The Lion in Winter. There’s also smaller fare that rarely gets heard, such as The Dove, High Road to China, The Deep and also his “Romance for Guitar and Orchestra” from Deadfall. After four hours of listening to Barry’s laid-back romantic style, you’ll be in no uncertainty that all those other collections were justified. It’s just a shame this didn’t come first. –Paul Tonks

Customer Review: What a disappointment!
When you think of film and television theme music, you think of the music which was actually played in the film or television programme, not a shallow copy of it like that on this compilation of John Barry’s superb music. The City of Prague Orchestra hasn’t just lost the plot, they don’t have a clue as to the DRIVE and breadth of sound which the theme music originally envisioned. The music is played well enough, but because it isn’t the ORIGINAL orchestra, or the original conductor, or even the original sound of the music, somehow the music seems shallow and completely lacking in feeling. I was VERY disappointed with this four-disc set and I don’t even bother playing the music. I can’t give the boxed set a rating of more than one star, and even then I feel I’m being generous.

Customer Review: Definitely not the originals
This stuff may have been played by a perfectly competant orchestra but WHY? The recordings completely loose the feel of the originals. For example, the moodiness of the Persuaders theme is completely lost as the original Mandolin (I assume) is replaced by something electronic.

Why when the original and superior recordings clearly still exist is an album of ‘covers’ required? - best to avoid!

All Time Greatest Country Songs

All Time Greatest Country Songs
Customer Review: All Time Greatest ?
Although there can never be a definitive greatest album of Country … this one gets pretty close. On first listening I thought a few tracks were a bit of an “iffy” choice, in either they where not really Country or I had heard better versions by other artists… but when listened to in it’s entirety …I was taken on a really wonderful journey through the range & depth of Country Music.

I would strongly recommend buying this album other Greatest will be along but I doubt if they will give anymore enjoyment than this one.

Customer Review: extremely good
This cd set is very good - a lively, happy collection of country music. It makes you want to ‘jig along’ with it & makes you feel good. Also a great ’singalong’ set of recordings for all budding singers. Even if you don’t intend singing in public, just a lovely set of songs to sing to. The contents is varied & is a great selection for the country fan. One you will play time & time again.

Customer Review: Roxy’s last big high
Despite the comments from other reviewers along the lins of “this is where it all went wrong for Roxy”, I prefer to look at this album as the last remnants of the truly great band that had given us three ground-breaking albums before this was released, in 1974. Rather than a portentous death knell, it merely sees the end of one creative strain, that, if we admit it, could never last forever.

The seventies glamour of the two Dutch girls on the cover showed the same old louche sleaziness that had become a Roxy trademark, while the music completely threw away the Brian Eno-inspired experimentation that had gone by 1973’s “Stranded”, but.. just to make sure..

Here we had sharper, more electric, more cutting sounds, such as the barnstorming opener, “The Thrill Of It All” and the contender for the third best Roxy single ever and certainly the most under-rated in the magnificent “All I Want Is You”. Three minutes of pop perfection if ever there was. “Out Of The Blue” is simply sublime, showing off Manzanera and Gustafson to great effect, not forgetting reliable old Paul Thompson behind them, making them 1974’s tightest outfit. “Three and Nine” is not nearly as bad as many have said, filling the “Just Like You” slot, and “If It Takes All Night” is a marvellous, jaunty sax-laden romp with Ferry on top form vocally. “A Really Good Time” is also much under-rated, as is the buzzing “Prairie Rose”.

Weaker tacks are the vaguely embarrassing “Triptych”, with its pretentious, quasi-Biblical lyrics and “Bitter-Sweet” with its lumpen attempt to show just how Europhile Roxy were in a truly awful German chorus.

“Casanova” brings us back to life, however, all lust and lounge bar lasciviousness over one of Roxy’s most driving backings.

The next album, “Siren” saw the seeds of change really begin to sprout, but here, in “Country Life”, Roxy were still trying to plough something of the same furrow, for the last time.

Customer Review: Huge disappointment
I bought this album when it came out in 1974 having been stunned by the first three Roxy albums and the two non-album singles, Virginia Plain and Pyjamarama. To a sixteen year old male, the album cover was a further strong buying motivator, I have to admit. After getting past the cover and listening to the music, however, my heart sank. I have rarely been as disappointed by an album as I was by this one. The first three albums were brilliant, this one was, at best, fair to middling. Sadly, it was the first step on the way to the sickly middle of the road garbage of the likes of Dance Away, Angel Eyes and Avalon. This is where Roxy Music started to lose their reason for being. After this they were no longer unique, no longer exciting. “The Thrill Of It All” had alas gone, never to return.

If you are considering whether to buy this album, don’t until you have bought Roxy Music, For Your Pleasure and Stranded.

The Entertainer - The Very Best of Scott Joplin

The Entertainer - The Very Best of Scott Joplin
Customer Review: Excellent
Brilliant to play along on the Piano with - all are in the same key!

Customer Review: Exquisite
Joplin did for the rag what Chopin did for the waltz, taking it far away from its saloon bar origins and developing it into a purely pianistic art form. No one brings this out more than Rifkin in this recording and his rendering especially of some of the slower more wistful rags like the Gladiolus and Weeping Willow is nothing less than exquisite. The faster more rumbustious numbers also show a wonderful sensitivity, especially to the movement and language of the left hand. It’s difficult not to want to dance to it, or at least tap your feet or bop your head around to the embarrassment of your friends if you are listening on a walkman. The finest part must be the Fig Leaf Rag, especially in the very evocative rolling chords of the fourth section.
This is of course only a selection, so some may be disappointed (and surprised) not to find the well known “Easy Winners” and “Heliotrope Bouquet” not featured, but the inclusion of one waltz (”Bethena”) and Solace (technically a Tango) compensate for this shortfall.

I’m 10,000 Years Old: Elvis Country - Remastered

I’m 10,000 Years Old: Elvis Country - Remastered
Customer Review: country boy
A country boy at heart he would spend alot of the seventies singing it. This album with one or two exceptions is superb. I washed my hands is down and dirty and its your baby top notch country.

Elvis a country singer you cry? yes indeed and a great one at that.

If you want them all without the i was born in between each track buy the seventies box set.

Customer Review: Landmark album - one of his best
This is really a great album. One of the few albums that really capture Elvis as a great recording artist. Though Elvis was a great recording artist, his albums were way too often not well constructed. Great songs were lost as a single b-sides etc. But here there’s no weak songs. Every performance is stellar and inspired. Still this might not be the Elvis you know. Not really a rock’n roll album or not the Elvis singing those over sentimental songs of loneliness and regret that became his “trademark” as the 70’s proceeded.

Though in my opinion this isn’t straight country album, it is quite “rootsy”. These performances are spirited and “live”. This might the album that could really turn Elvis skeptics into respecting the King, because here Elvis did what he wanted to do and knew how to do it. These were done during those days before he lost himself into the world of chemicals, depression and slow selfdestruction.

Once again a reminder of what Elvis was capable of doing.

Customer Review: Fantastic
As a Yank and a lover of all things brit, I found this cd overwhelming. Play it at full blast and all the neighbors will join you in singing both the British version and American version of these wonderful, familiar, and sacred songs. What an experience!!!

Customer Review: rule brittania
i am by no means a classical music fan (more like 60s)but there is certain music that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up and this music does this and when you consider how long ago it was written is amazing,i guess its what being british is all about.

Customer Review: Big Country Big Sound
I always thought they were treated as a bit of a poor relation to Simple Minds and U2 . I thought their sound was completely distinctive and certainly the ‘Scottishness’ shone through . I lent this album to a Scottish Military colleaugue he liked it so much that he never gave it back ….. bloody Pikey ! Any way I’ll buy it again and really enjoy listening again . I am very sorry about Stewart Adamson though a sad end to avery talented man

Customer Review: Great Eighties Nostalgia!
Their unique style was only going to have limited appeal. They tried to become more mainstream pop as years went by, but never going to better the legendary “The Crossing” Album which has their trademark Scottish sound.

Still, buy this compilation album for some great eighties moments. It’s dirt cheap! And great for listening to in the car!!…

Customer Review: Josh is a gem
Selfish I know, but I quite like the fact that hardly anyone has heard of Josh Rouse! He’s kind of “our secret” and he’s a real gem of a songwriter. His body of work must rank up there alongside any other singer/songwriter, and perhaps his only fault is that he records and releases too much. As a result this album is not quite up there with Nashville or 1972, although it’s more consistent than Subtitulo. It goes back to the warm, 70s pop sound of “1972″. Sweetie is classic Josh pop, Hollywood Bassplayer is a funky toe-tapper, and Nice To Fit In is great stuff with a lonesome lyric that recalls his earlier releases. London Bridges should have been the first UK single from the album, for the obvious reason, but also because it’s a lovely warm and catchy tune that would sound fantastic on the radio and probably best sums up this cracking CD. Fans should try to track down the very good Country Mouse Companion CD with bonus tracks and acoutic versions.

Customer Review: Returning to top form
Perhaps Nashville and 1972 were flukes because (after the very average Subtitulo) although this is better it is still not in the same bracket.

Having said that it is sprinkled with several tracks that remind you why you liked him first time around. ‘Sweetie’ is the typical Rouse track, a deceptively simple song that sticks in your head all day. Not all that follows feels as singular although the elbum never really drags. Horns liven the music in several places although the feel is more soul than latin. Final track ‘Snowy’ is a gentle gem.

Rouse is never going to be adventurous but at his best he can produce great ‘easy’ music. This new album is close to his best but just has a handful of rather average tracks to drop the overall effect.
