The Essential George Jones: The Spirit of Country

The Essential George Jones: The Spirit of Country
Customer Review: Start your George Jones collection here
George has had a long career spanning half a century and recorded for several labels. Sometime he re-recorded hits he’d had with previous labels, but what makes this compilation unique is that it includes original recordings from four different labels, covering the fifties, sixties, seventies and eighties. Sony (who own the Epic recordings) licensed tracks from the other three labels represented here.

The first seven tracks were recorded for Mercury and cover the period 1955 to 1961, beginning with Why baby why and ending with Tender years. The standout from this period is Window up above, a very sad song about lost love. George’s Mercury years are covered in greater depth in the 48-track double CD Cup of loneliness.

The next three tracks - She thinks I still care, We must have been out of our minds (with Melba Montgomery) and The race is on - are from his period with United Artists (1962 to 1965). Although these are the three most famous tracks, there should have been more than that. This period is covered in greater depth in the 40-track Razor and tie compilation She Thinks I Still Care: The George Jones Collection.

The next five tracks are from his Musicor period (1965 to 1970), including Walk through this world with me and Good year for the roses. There were other great songs from this period, but there is no definitive compilation covering this period.

The remainder of this compilation is devoted to his long spell with Epic which covers most of the seventies and eighties, including duets with Merle Haggard, Johnny Paycheck, Ray Charles and four songs with Tammy Wynette. Of his own songs from this period, the most famous is He stopped loving her today, a very sad song about a man who remained loyal to a woman who had left him - until he died.

This is a stunning collection of George’s music. It’s not possible to get all his big hits into two CD’s, but this is the best place to begin a George Jones collection.

Goodbye Country (Hello Nightclub)

Goodbye Country (Hello Nightclub)
Customer Review: I never know if this one is GA’s best or Vertigo. OK. I’ll go for this
One of those albums that never saturates your ears. I am a big GA fan and I believe this is their best. It has the best track to dig your wardrobe before going out: Superstylin, the best one to drift away while partying: Drifted, the best one for an after party mellow chillout: Lazy Moon, the best one for the cabride home: Raisin the Stakes and the best one to clean your toilet next morning: Fogma. You will not be disappointed!

Customer Review: You will never tire of this album
I received this CD as a Christmas present from my brother.

The first time through, I was intrigued. The more I listened, the more I felt it had something yet further to offer. Several advertisers and commercial video producers have picked up on “Edge Hill” and “Lazy Moon” - for me, as for them, stand-out tracks that keep bringing me back to this album years after first hearing it.

This album relaxes and inspires at the same time. Brilliant!

100 Country Greats

100 Country Greats
Customer Review: Great range of real country music
I disagree with the review which says these are mainly re-recordings or live versions. I grew up with a lot of these tunes and they sound as good as ever. The focus is on classic country, with hardly any of the country pap…er, pop which has ruined the Nashville sound. Hit after solid hit!

Customer Review: Search out the originals
What this compilation lacks for in quality it makes up in quantity. All of the tracks are subsequent recordings of the originals or of live performances at periods which can only be descibed as the twilight of the artist’s career. I was very disappointed and my cash could have been better spent.

Customer Review: Beautiful -I Love It!!!
I was lucky enough to see Jools Holland live at Beaulieu when I was recently in the UK. Lulu was his special guest. The show was brilliiant, especially when Lulu came on stage. I bought this CD when I got home not knowing much about it. It is beautiful. The arrangement on ‘Dreaming My Dreams’ is so haunting, really gorgeous. Jools and his band are great. I bought it as I am a long time Lulu fan and of course her tracks with Jools are brilliant. Also loved the Bob Geldof track and Tom Jones ‘Wish I Was 18′. This CD is well worth a listen. Jools Holland and his band make good music and I will play this often.

Customer Review: Self - indulgent rubbish
Firstly let me state I am a fan of Jools Holland & the R & B Orchestra that’s the reason I bought this c.d.

As someone else stated in another review I should have checked out the singers. If your idea of pleasure is to hear beautiful classic songs being butchered by so called singers (Lulu, Geldof e.t.c.) then this is for you otherwise steer clear of this self - indulgent nonsense and go for the originals instead.

I expected better of Mr Holland & his crew. 1 star for the fact that they can obviously play their instruments, be it without any soul or emotion on this hideous album.

A Country Christmas

A Country Christmas
Customer Review: Y’all have an easy country Christmas, now
There are a lot worse albums around than this easy-going collection of country & western versions of favourite Christmas songs.

Opening with Trisha Yearwood’s silky-smooth version of “The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting…)” it does lull anyone for whom C&W is not their favourite cup of meat into a false sense of security. Even Loretta Lynn does second cut, “White Christmas”, no harm, and Lee Greenwood’s “Let It Snow…” is as straight as a bean pole. Reba McEntire’s twangy soprano on track four is where the serious stuff starts, and it doesn’t look back from there on, with plenty of steel guitars and thick Nashville accents following.

The likes of Yearwood, McEntire and Greenwood have two tracks each, as do Barbara Mandrell, Steve Wariner and Ernest Tubb. You’ll gather from these names that we’re talking country & western establishment here, none of the feisty, pop/rock influenced stars of the 90s - unfortunately the booklet is short on information so you can’t tell exactly when some of these were recorded, but Tubb goes back to the early 1950s, sounding very Hank Williams and “The Last Picture Show”. I guess most of them are 1970s/1980s, though, and sound quality is generally good.

The pace is easy throughout - the closest they get to breaking sweat is a little bluegrass square dance from Bill Monroe (”Christmas Time’s A Coming”) and Ray Stevens’ “Greatest Little Christmas Ever Wuz”. All the usual Christmas songs are covered, plus some less familiar, and the only carols aired are in a medley, by Steve Wariner, as the closing track. Curiously, there are two versions of “Blue Christmas”, one by Ernest Tubb (who also does “Rudolph…”) and the other, not much more recent, by Webb Pierce.

It’s all clean, wholesome, easy listening, and whiles away just over an hour - can’t fault it.

Scott Joplin: Piano Rags [IMPORT]

Scott Joplin: Piano Rags [IMPORT]
Customer Review: One of the greatest ever performances
I cannot sufficiently praise this album - it is simply one of the greatest ever recordings of any music by anybody. It is as near to perfection as one gets in this world.

The music is wonderful, the performances lyrical and strong, the sound is rich, the atmosphere joyous and wistful. I have listened to this album literally hundreds of times, I am listening to it now - it never palls.

The only sadness is that Rifkin did not record more of Jopin’s work - and that this CD is an incomplete selection of pieces from three LPs which are now unavailable - although I am lucky enough to posses the second one which has several gems not on the CD including Rose Leaf Rag which is Joplin at the peak of his powers.

I bracket Rifkin playing Joplin with Gould playing Bach and Bream playing Dowland in my personal Hall of Fame.

Customer Review: Unique & Timeless Music
My piano teacher at school castigated me for wanting to learn Scott Joplin pieces on the piano. Not proper music. The guy did not even want me to learn Mozart for God’s sake such was his high brow view of classical music. But in the end Scott Joplin is about the most joyous music it is possible to listen to and here on this set Mr Rifkin brings 17 pieces to life so that you almost feel that the man Scott Joplin is performing for you personally in your own living room! There are so many great moments here and I will mention a few. But the overall effect is to demonstrate Joplin’s incredible talent for not only a catchy melody (Elite Syncopations, Entertainer, Maple Leaf Rag) but also wonderfully atmospheric pieces such as Solace and Euphonic Sounds. And wonderful harmony throughout. My piano teacher was wrong. Herein lies some great music. Not just stomping ragtime piano but clever harmony, superb melodies, clever time structures (elite syncopations?!) and moreover this is really uplifting music. Who can listen to this record and not feel absolutely uplifted when the final track Magnetic Rag comes to its gorgeous close? Just that last track is a masterpiece in itself. And it is sad and pertinent to point out that Magnetic Rag was the very last piece he released before his premature death at the age of 49. Too many artists die at a young age, enough of them to make you feel depressed. But Scott Joplin signed off on a high note as did The Beatles with Abbey Road. Not many others.

You are one of the greats as far as I’m concerned Scott Joplin.

Lark Rise to Candleford: a Country Tapestry

Lark Rise to Candleford: a Country Tapestry
Customer Review: Great songs from a great production
Contrary to a reviewer stating this is an early 1970’s album it actually dates from the late 1970’s/early 1980’s and is in effect a soundtrack to a National Theatre production of Flora Thompson’s Candleford Trilogy. I went to see the production in the Cottisloe Theatre and the show was done in the round i.e. the audience were an integral part of the show.

The music at the time was stunning and remains so and even though I still have the LP of this album I had to buy it once it became available again.

All in all it shows Ashley Hutchings and the rest of the Albion Band at their most creative with some truly great songs both old and new. This is a must have for all lovers of modern folk.

If you have time please read the books whic are a paean to a lost age

Customer Review: A fantastic blast from the past!
If like me you are a fan of electric folk music you will be familiar with Ashley Hutchins legendary status in the genre. His vast work with the Albion band has spanned over 4 decades. This work is a landmark in as much as it contains much traditional music interspersed with readings from Flora Thompson’s wonderful account of Hamlet life in Oxfordshire in the years leading up to the First World War.

The music is treated with great respect, in spite of purists saying that an electric guitar and drum kit have no place in the world of Folk. Without such albums these wonderful tunes would in all probability die. The playing is of a high order, the vocals created in an authentic ‘local’ style and add such true original character to the songs. The end result is a sympathetically digitally remastered copy from the Late 1970’s original.

This album has been out of print for years, and I have been trying without success to find a copy, so to discover this re-issue has truly been a pleasure.

If you enjoy folk music, this is an essential part of any collection.
